Measured Bondage:
Sadism and Medicine Under the Magnifying Glass
In 2006, while an Artist-in-Residence in Berlin I began another project dismantling the text, Minor Surgical Gynecology: A Manual, published in 1880, in which I created a series of intimate paintings that examine the relationship between medicine and sadism, gender and authority. I collaborated with a local architect on the reconstruction of a Victorian-era gynecological examining table which the viewer was invited to be strapped onto in order to view a screening of David Cronenbergs film of the unraveling relationship between twin male gynecologists and their patients, Dead Ringers.
